Michael Carter's Meadowlands Racetrack Selections
Date: Saturday, February 2
Best Bet: #2 Larry Karr Race 12
Best Longshot: #2 Webmaster Hanover Race 11
#10 Try Try Again has been improving every week at Woodbine Mohawk Park and will try The Meadowlands for the first time for trainer Ron Burke. This horse races first off the layoff which has been a hot number for Burke as of late. #9 Piercewave Hanover looked really sharp last week and narrowly missed against tougher company. Tonight he drops in class and could pop, driver change back to trainer Jordan Derue. #4 Moscani Hanover tired late against tougher last week after setting the pace early. Will need a decent effort against this group tonight, but should be able to hit the ticket.
50-cent Pick 5
2,4,9,10/2,3,7/3,7/10/2,9 - Cost: $24.00
This is an extremely tough race that I think is completely wide-open. #2 K-Lees Shakenbake looked very sharp last week first off the layoff for trainer Ron Burke. If he can repeat that effort I think he has a big chance at decent second choice odds. #3 Spaghetti Eddie is the Jessica Otten longshot play of the day and I have to agree that he has a chance against this group after winning three of his last four starts. Definitely worth a look. #7 Obscene Blue Chip is assigned the outside tonight after a game effort last week. He is in first off the claim this week for trainer Randy Bickmore.
#7 Pop Pop Joe went to the lead last week and never looked back drawing off to win easily. Tonight he draws further outside and steps up in class. If he is anywhere close to that effort last week he wins easy. #3 CC Big Boy Sam gets CC in the sulky this week following a very tough effort against upper-level claimers last week. He races better when he is forwardly placed. Worth a look at a price tonight. #6 Show Me Up has been ultra-consistent as of late and that could spell good things for the connections. He handled the step up in class well last out, I like his chances to hit the ticket.
#10 Siskel was a horse that I fancied last week and he was flat out flying turning for home and just missed in the end. I said last week that I would bet him back, and that is what I am going to do. #3 All About Rusty draws well again this week after getting the trip last week and having to grind first over. If he gets anywhere near that trip this week he could score even with him being up in class. #5 Rock Star is up in class this week following a game second-place effort last week where he just missed. The TrackMaster number here is something I would not ignore.
#2 Life Happened was another horse I really liked last week that made a sharp closing effort turning for home and narrowly missed. He was last turning for home last week and just missed, look for him to be closer to the pace tonight. #9 This Is My Song was another first off the layoff horse that scored last week for trainer Ron Burke. The draw wasn't kind to him this week, but if Gingras can be forwardly placed then he should have a shot. #7 Mr Censi was parked the mile last week and still managed to close home in 27 3/5. Driver change this week to Dexter Dunn.
#1 Bravo Tex N qualified pretty well at Monticello, considering it was the first time this gelding has been on a half-mile track. Going to give him a chance off the rail at big odds. #2 Windsong Jack looked extremely good first off the layoff last week as he tried to gain ground over a fast track, but it was very cold out. Look for a better trip with an inside draw. #9 Tact Tate N gets Dunn back in the bike tonight who this gelding seems to get along with. He has a good amount of speed, which normally gets him into a little bit of trouble. If he can ration out the speed and allow himself to be forwardly placed, he should be fine.
#1 Whittaker was stung to the first quarter last week, was forced to take back and then charged hard down the lane to just miss in a big effort 1:50.3. He draws much better this week and gets Carlson back in the back, worth a play tonight. #3 Bushwacker closed gamely from off the pace last week with Dunn in the bike and narrowly missed in the end. Tonight he gets a good draw, and it has been proven before that he likes to be forwardly placed. #2 Redonkulous tired badly last week after getting caught up in an early speed duel up front. The draw was kinder to this one as well.
#3 Somebaddude has won two of his last three starts and considering the draw this week I wouldn't expect anything less than that effort tonight. The TrackMaster numbers say this horse is ready to rock. #8 Ideal Jimmy showed how versatile he was last week when he was forced to come from off the pace and just missed against a very nice group. Tonight is going to be a little bit easier for him and I expect he will be close at nice odds. #9 Mindtrip was another hard-charging closer that was facing tough company last week. This group of horses is about the same and while it will be tough I think he could hit the board.
50-cent Pick 4
3,8,9/9/2,7,10/1,2,6 - Cost: $13.50
#9 Smileandsaycheese was a lot better than the line shows last week where he closed from off the pace and just missed. The closing speed of 26.4 really jumps off the page at me. Worth a look this week as Carlson picks up the mount this week. #4 Spicebomb was parked the mile last week and still passed a horse late in the stretch. He has a little bit of speed to contend with and if he is forwardly placed I think he could show up on the ticket. #1 Jacksrluckytoo made a three-wide bid up the backstretch last week and closed gamely to finish third. Look for a big trip off the rail.
#10 Century Churchill went right to the lead last week from post ten and just got nailed on the line by a very good K Lees Shakenbake. Tonight the field is a touch easier, but the post is where the problem lies. I think Carlson leaves and tries to cut the mile. #7 Aslan gets Dunn back in the bike tonight following a couple of tough, but game efforts. He seems to get along with this gelding pretty well. #2 Electric Western made up a ton of ground in a race where the pace fell apart. Andy Miller gets the drive tonight, worth a play at what will be big odds.
#2 WebmasterHanover could very well be the value play of the night at morning line odds of 10/1. He faces some easier company this week and I expect him to be forwardly placed. #1 Giacodelight draws well towards the inside tonight, you almost have throw out the start last week. The race was one he needed following a week off. #6 Nobles Finesse is another price play that gets a big driver change tonight to Gingras. He has struggled as of late, going to give another chance tonight.
#2 Larry Karr was my best bet last week and he drew off to win easily against this class. The draw was much kinder to this gelding this week and I expect continued improvement from him. #3 Monty's Play has won two straight against this group and has looked sharp in both efforts. The question is can he keep up with the speed of this class. #5 Wise Image is a very consistent gelding that has a good amount of early speed to contend with. If you are looking for a price play underneath this is the play for you.
#9 Four Staces was my top selection last week and he just missed against this group. Tonight he draws tough again and I expect Gingras to have him towards the front. #2 Mccito looked good last week, but was stung to the first quarter and got a little leg weary in the stretch while coming home in 28.2 . Worth another look tonight. #8 Walzacrossthewire gets Miller back in the bike tonight following a tough second place effort in his last start. He has the speed to be forwardly placed, if he can get there and ration the speed out he could be dangerous.
